iFocus Gallery

On Thursday, January 30, 2020, at 20:00, the group photography exhibition titled "The Smile" will be inaugurated at iFocus Gallery (Opera Arcade, Akadimias Street), curated by Platon Rivellis. The exhibition features 55 photographers who present a total of 166 photographs.

The exhibition, as well as the seminar from which it originated, was sponsored by the dental products company Ivoclar Vivadent.

“The Smile”

A group exhibition resulting from a four-day seminar and many hours of solitary photography

Photography reveals its strength when it allows multiple and different approaches without being confined to depicting the subject that justified the capture. For photographers, the "how" may be more important than the "what," but still, one cannot exist without the other. And if the conjunction of these two aims to create a poetic visual event, then choosing a simple descriptive subject constitutes a valuable challenge for the photographer. Typically, the most suitable photographic subjects are those that present their meager presence yet conceal their rich abstract power. "The Smile" is one of these. It declares clearly a few things and implies ambiguously many more.

The choice of this theme as the impetus for a four-day photography seminar contains an ambiguous element of surprise, especially when combined with the fact that the sponsor of the seminar and the exhibition that completed its realization is a major dental products company, Ivoclar Vivadent, whose purpose is to highlight the smile. The theme reveals the complexity of the goals and approaches. Science and art explore their boundaries and overlaps. The certainties of the former feed the hesitations of the latter.

The fifty-five photographers participating in the exhibition—some with two works and others with four—express different—though sometimes related—views on a theme that might seem commonplace, but all know that it encompasses the charm and awkwardness of a mystery. The catalog hosts only one photograph from each photographer, thus limiting the support for different approaches, but highlighting the kaleidoscopic dimension of a mosaic of the magical power of the smile.

The passion for excellence and differentiation is a central axis of Ivoclar Vivadent's operational strategy. Thus, the pursuit of excellence in all activities met with the master and theorist of photography, Plato Rivellis.

In the dental industry, the approach to the smile from an artistic perspective is innovative. Modest, awkward, guilty, childlike, triumphant, haughty, cunning, wide, suggestive, ironic, innocent, bright.

Let this edition be an occasion for even better smiles and a pleasant surprise for all visitors to dental clinics.
