The fourteenth video from the series "Short Monologues by Plato Rivellis on Photography and Art".

Much has been said about the issue of black-and-white photography versus color. In the past, black-and-white was wrongly considered as the only artistic form of photography. I believe that the triumph of black-and-white was due to two very simple facts. The first is that the majority of the great photographers we admired, the overwhelming majority, necessarily worked in black-and-white, since that was the technique of the time. Color existed since the late 19th century but in a very primitive technical form. It did not last over time and did not render colors as the photographer wanted. In the past, when we started out in photography, it was enough to choose a film. And the film predetermined the result: color or black-and-white. The biggest change in photography that digital photography has brought, in my opinion, is that, like it or not, we all now shoot in color, color photos. This does not mean that black-and-white has died, because technology can never impose an artistic view or choice on us. Now, once again, we are forced to think more, since digital technology gives us the ability to decide afterwards, if our photograph is better in black-and-white or in color. At first, we were all lost and didn't exactly know how to proceed. It was very simple if we understood the gift digital technology gave us to be able to judge, depending on the case, what result we want. It's simpler than it sounds. I have the impression that a photograph is bad, whether it is black-and-white or color, and then it is rejectable. In other words, it cannot be saved by changing its color or removing its color. However, a good photograph can, depending on the case, better convey its content if the colors are removed or if the colors are kept. The photographer can now, beforehand, decide if a particular subject should be in black-and-white, or afterwards, depending on the case, if a photograph will be used as color or as black-and-white. It's that simple and doesn't take much courage, it just requires us to detach from certain things that were given in the past and that have now changed in reality.
