Seminar with Plato Rivellis
A Week in Syros
Sunday, July 6 – Saturday, July 12, 2025
Content
The established summer seminar, held for over 30 years, has a great response and produces impressive results.
Initially, the goal of this seminar was the systematic and daily practice of photography and critique, with a secondary objective of screening classic films. In earlier years, these films were not only unfamiliar to the general public but also difficult to find.
The digital revolution may not have changed the essence of art and photography, but it has significantly impacted its process. The ease of mass-producing photographs, along with the ability to discover the work of hundreds of talented photographers online, has altered both the needs and the teaching methods of artistic photography within the Photographic Circle. The winter online seminars have shifted their focus towards continuous photographic production and critique, as well as the exploration of an increasing number of great photographers, whose work was largely unknown in the past.
At the Syros seminar, only the priorities have shifted over the years, without altering its content or essence. In recent years, greater emphasis has been placed on broader artistic cultivation, incorporating references to other art forms. Often, approaching artistic challenges becomes more accessible through a different type of artistic expression. At the same time, photographs are still being produced and analyzed, but in a broader and more open-ended manner, with a particular focus on photo series and thematic coherence.
Participation in this or any other Photographic Circle seminar does not require a specific level of photographic knowledge—whether more or less advanced. The mixing of different levels of experience and knowledge is actually an advantage for the photographic group.
The in-person presence of photographers at the Syros seminar has always been an attraction, but it can also be an obstacle for those who find it difficult to commit to several days away from work and home or to cover expenses for travel, accommodation, and meals. For this reason, technical issues will be resolved to ensure that participation is possible both in person and online.
