Platon RivellisHe was born in Athens, Greece in 1945.
He studied Law in Athens (1963-1968), Political Sciences in Paris (1968-1970) and Photography in the USA (1983).
He worked as a lawyer in Athens for twelve years (1971-1983).
He has been teaching Photography since 1981 in various venues.
He has organised the model departments of Photography of the “Laiki Epimorphosi” (Ministry of Education – Adult Educational Programmmes) and taught its instructors.
He has edited a series of programmes on Photography shown on Greek National Television; he also edited many photographic books and curated many exhibitions.
He has delivered numerous seminars and lectures on photography in Athens, Cyprus and elsewhere.
He has exhibited his work in both solo and group exhibitions.
His articles have been published in numerous Greek newspapers and magazines.
He is the Director of the “Photohoros” publications.
He founded in 1988 the “Photography Circle” society, of which he is the President.
He is the author of several books – theoretical publications and albums with photographs.

  • From 1981 until 1985 the course on Photography (elementary and advanced) at the “University of LaVerne” in Kifissia.
  • From 1981 until 1988 seven introductory seminars (four month duration) on Creative Photography at the Studio Quark in Athens.
  • From 1983 until 1987 the course on Photography at the “Moraitis High School” in Athens.
  • From 1985 until 1995, in various towns of Greece, twelve seminars (four day duration) for the instructors of the Adult Educational Programme of the Ministry of Education.
  • From 1985 until today more than thirty lectures on Photography on various occasions and at various venues in Greece.
  • In 1986 he organised the Photography Department of the “Paremvassis” society (a society for former drug addicts).
  • In 1986 he organised the Photography Department for the Training Centre of the “Athens Children’s Hospital” (professor Tsiantis).
  • From 1987 until 1993 the course on Photography at the “Athens College” in Athens.
  • In 1988 he gave a series of lectures on the organisation and teaching of a photography course for the teachers of the Technical High Schools of Athens.
  • From 1988 until 1991 four advanced seminars (ten day duration) on Photography and Criticism at the “Photography Circle” in Athens.
  • From 1988 until 1992 the course on Creative Photography at the “Focus” school for photography.
  • From 1988 until 1993 six seminars on Creative Photography for the Adult Educational Programme of the “Athens College”.
  • From 1988 until 2002 twenty-eight introductory seminars (four month duration) on Creative Photography at the “Photography Circle” in Athens.
  • From 1990 until 2010 in various towns of Greece twelve introductory seminars (four day duration) on Creative Photography.

  • In 1995 he delivered a series of lectures on Photography at the French Institute of Salonica.
  • In 1997, 2005 and 2006 he delivered film seminars (projection and analysis of films) in Rhodes, Cyprus (three) and Crete.
  • In 1998 he instructed a Photography seminar for “Christie’s” educational courses in Athens.
  • Since 1999 one advanced seminar per year (ten day duration) on Photography and Criticism on the island of Syros.
  • Since 2002 he has been delivering in Syros ten seminars per year (four day duration) focusing on the work of major film directors.
  • Since 2003 one introductory seminar per year (eight month duration) on Creative Photography at the “Benaki Museum” in Athens.
  • Since 2005 he has been presenting every Thursday evening at the Benaki Museum the work of young Greek photographers and famous film directors.
  • In November and December 2006 he delivered a twenty-hour photography seminar to postgraduate students of the Athens School of Fine Arts.
  • Since 2006 he has been delivering every October a series of five two-hour long lectures at the auditorium of the Hellenic American Union in Athens focusing on the way photography and cinema deal with various important issues.
  • Since 2006 he has been instructing every September on the island of Syros a three day seminar on photographic portfolio critique.
  • In 2012 he instructed seven Photography seminars in the Museums owned by the Bank of Piraeus, in seven Greek towns (Soufli, Dimitsana, Lesvos, Volos, Stymfalia, Sparta, Tinos).
  • In 2013, 2014 and 2015 he instructed seven Photography seminars in the Museums owned by the Bank of Piraeus, one in each of seven Greek towns (Soufli, Dimitsana, Lesvos, Volos, Stymfalia, Sparta, Tinos).
  • In 2013 he instructed three Photography seminars in Chania, Thessaloniki anf Corfu.
  • Since 2012 each winter he instructs at the Benaki Museum a twenty seven hour seminar under the title "Photographic Critique".

  • He is a regular columnist and a Photography critic for the major Greek newspaper “Ta Nea”, as well as for the magazine “Photographos, a weekly supplement of the Greek newspaper “Kathimerini”. Several of his articles have been published in photography reviews such as, “Eidolo”, “Photopolitismos, “Aerostato”, “Minima”, “Photohoros”, “Artime” etc.
  • He has edited and presented thirteen programmes on photography for the Greek National Television (entitled “The Art of Photography”), four programmes for the Greek Educational Television (entitled “About Photography”), as well as seven programmes on the Art of Photography together with Katerina Zaharopoulou for the Greek National Television (2005-2006).
  • He has edited and presented twenty two- hour radio programmes on classical music for the Municipal Radio Station of the island of Syros.
  • He has taken part in several round table discussions on Photography (Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art, Andros - French Institute of Athens - National Bank of Greece - Megaron Plus of the Athens Concert Hall etc.).
